Hyundai Launches New Avante

Hyundai on Wednesday launched a totally revamped version of its flagship Avante compact.

The launch is expected to fuel competition in the market segment against GM Korea's Cruze, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

"The Avante AD is completely different from the Avante MD, which was released five years ago," claimed Hyundai vice chairman Yang Woong-chul. "The new model offers the best quality, performance and safety in its class."

Cumulative global sales of the Avante since its debut in 1990 surpassed 10 million units in October last year, making it Korea’s first single vehicle model to achieve the feat.

The new Avante comes with four different engines: a 1.6-liter diesel engine, 1.6-liter and 2-liter gasoline engines and a 1.6-liter LPG.

The 1.6-liter diesel model can produce up to 136 horsepower with maximum torque of 30.6 kg.m. It offers fuel efficiency of 18.4 km per liter, 13.6 percent more efficient than its predecessor.

The 1.6-liter gasoline model delivers up to 132 horsepower and fuel efficiency of 18.4 km per liter. The 2-liter gasoline model will be released this year for those who prefer a bigger engine.

The new compact is equipped with advanced safety features including an autonomous emergency braking system, a feature seen only in larger sedans, and seven airbags.

The 1.6-liter gasoline model is priced at W15.31 million to W21.25 million, and the 1.6-liter diesel version costs W17.82 million to W23.71 million (US$1=W1,194).
